On Wednesday, 10 December 2025, the Johannesburg Giants Basketball Club continued to advance its mission of community upliftment through the Giants Cares Initiative, a programme dedicated to nurturing young talent and strengthening basketball communities across South Africa.

The Giants spent the day at King Edward VII School (KES), hosting a powerful basketball clinic with the U18A team. The session focused on developing core skills, reinforcing discipline, and sharing the winning mindset required to excel both on and off the court.

The court buzzed with energy, leadership, and learning as players engaged with Giants coaches and senior athletes, gaining firsthand experience of what it takes to perform at a professional level. More than just drills and techniques, the clinic highlighted the role sport plays in shaping character, building resilience, and creating pathways for young athletes.

Our team visited St Anne’s Rehabilitation Center, a safe haven for vulnerable children and a place filled with resilience, hope and the spirit of community.

Through Giants Cares, we aim to use our platform to create real, lasting impact. During our visit, the team donated food supplies and financial support to assist the center in meeting its daily needs. Beyond the donations, our players spent valuable time interacting with the children, sharing moments of joy, encouragement and connection. These are the kinds of interactions that remind us why community matters.

For the Giants, this visit was not an obligation but a privilege. Giants Cares represents our belief that leadership extends far beyond basketball. We are committed to rising as athletes and as role models who uplift and support the communities around us. St Anne’s Rehabilitation Center reminded us that strength comes in many forms and that compassion can change the trajectory of a young life.

As we continue our journey into the BAL 2026 season, we remain grounded in the values that define us. Being champions is not only about what happens on the court. It is also about showing up for our people and contributing to a better future across the continent.

Johannesburg, South Africa – The Johannesburg Giants Basketball Club is proud to announce the appointment of Ms. Berlina Moroole as its new Chairperson, marking a significant milestone in the club’s long-term strategic vision.

Ms. Moroole, a respected leader known for her passion for basketball, commitment to community development, and strong governance principles, steps into the role with a clear vision of elevating the Giants beyong the court.

In her official statement, Ms. Moroole expressed her excitement for the huge responsibility that rests on her shoulders as she begins this new chapter with the Giants who have just qualified for the 2026 BAL season.

“I am truly honored and incredibly excited to step into the role of Chairperson of the Johannesburg Giants Basketball Club. This position represents far more than a leadership title for me. It is a meaningful opportunity to help shape the future of this proud organization and contribute to a sport I am deeply passionate about and wholeheartedly believe in.

I look forward to working closely with the Giants executive team as we build a club grounded in belief, excellence, resilience and pride. The appointment of Ms. Moroole comes as the Johannesburg Giants strengthen their efforts to grow the sport at grassroots level, enhance player development structures, expand community engagement as well as reinforce operational excellence within the club.

Club CEO and Head Coach, Flosh Ngwenya, welcomed the appointment, noting that Ms. Moroole brings both heart and strategic insight to the position:
“Ms. Moroole’s leadership comes at the perfect time for the Giants. Her vision aligns with our ambitions for competitive excellence both domestically and internationally, organizational integrity, and impactful community engagement. We are confident that with her guidance, the club will reach new heights.”

Johannesburg Giants Clinch Qualification for BAL 2026 After Gritty Victory Over Dar City. Johannesburg, South Africa – The Johannesburg Giants have officially secured their place in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) 2026, following a hard-fought and emotional win over Dar City- one that players and coaches alike are calling a defining moment for the team and for South African basketball.

Head Coach Flosh Ngwenya expressed pride in the team’s composure and execution under pressure:

“Happy we qualified. That’s the first thing, that was our goal coming here. We made it to the final, and the team play overall today was pretty good. We cut down on our mistakes from the previous games, had fewer turnovers, and rebounded the ball well. The scouting reports really worked, and the guys executed perfectly.

We made a couple of mistakes, and I felt we could have won by more. They were a little tired and got out of sync when we switched to our zone. But overall, we’ll take the W. Whether it’s by one point or twenty, a win is a win; especially one that qualifies you for the BAL.”

Team captain Pieter highlighted the magnitude of the moment for both the club and South African basketball:

“The Dar City game was a huge moment for our team. We knew the win would secure our berth to BAL, and it was a fight down to the end. We showed our resilience and the cohesive unit we’ve built in this organization.

This is without a doubt a massive moment for us and for basketball in South Africa. We’re filled with joy because this was the goal we set months ago before SA Club Champs. But the job isn’t completely done. We want to stamp our authority on the basketball scene in Africa.”

Guard Nino praised the team’s grit and defensive determination:

“The game was a strong matchup, Dar City has a lot of experience and beating them was no easy feat. We showed good character coming back from behind to win such a crucial game. Nathi had a big block at the end that secured the win, and we kept making key defensive plays throughout the second half.

We are obviously happy to qualify for BAL. We understand the level of competition that awaits us, and we’re looking forward to the preparation.”With their BAL qualification now confirmed, the Johannesburg Giants turned their focus to the tournament final – ready to finish the job and carry their momentum into the continental stage.

The Johannesburg Giants have done it yet again! After a dominant run through the Road to BAL Group E Qualifiers in Zambia, the Giants have officially qualified for the BAL Elite 16, taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 18–23 November 2025! 🔥 

Undefeated 5–0 run in the group stage and finished top of Group E

The team lit up the court in Zambia with passion, precision, and pure hustle, demonstrating why they’re one of the most exciting basketball teams on the continent. From lockdown defence to explosive offense, the Giants dominated every matchup and are now one step closer to the Basketball Africa League 2026 season.
